RATIONALE
This unit entitled “Dental Health” is designed for Kindergarten. The unit will integrate many academic disciplines while teaching students about the teeth with specifics such as types of teeth, tooth decay, good and bad foods for your teeth, brushing, and the dentist.
Students will do a variety of activities to enhance their learning. First the students will explore an introduction to the types of teeth and their parts. Then the students will experience through experiments and observations why we should take care of our teeth. Next students will learn how to identify healthy and unhealthy foods for our teeth and demonstrate their new knowledge with a picture sort. Finally students will learn the importance of brushing their teeth through literature and hands on activities. The language arts concept of sequencing will be weaved throughout.

the students will be producing models, speaking and listening during discussions, applying process knowledge that enables them to become independent leaders through inquiry and design, and studying the dynamics of dental health, which includes the studies of personal hygiene and choices that can positively and negatively affect your health.
When the unit is complete, the students will be able to describe teeth, the different parts of a tooth and their functions, proper care of teeth, the causes and characteristics of tooth decay, and describe the role of the dentist. This content is key in a students' ability to understand, explore, and explain their personal health.
